George Back served as Dean of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral for almost three decades. He graduated from Bard College and received an S.T.M. degree from the General Theological Seminary. He served churches in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Florida before coming to Oklahoma in 1982.
During his tenure as Dean, St. George’s Guild was established at the Cathedral. This ministry has provided food, transportation, and emergency assistance services downtown for more than thirty years. The bombing of the Murrah Building in 1995 severely damaged the historic Cathedral facilities. The entire campus was rebuilt, updated, and expanded.
He is the author of Christmas Joy; Let Heaven and Nature Sing. Since retirement, Dean Back has been researching forms of coherence in spirituality, science, and art. Dean Back is married to Margaret Back and they have three children, H. Elizabeth Back, N. Luke Back, and George M. Back.
